Yea he made it easier for party members, SS, and “loyal Germans” to obtain firearms. Conveniently though Jews, gypsies, blacks and gays could still not own firearms… The very people who needed them.
Wouldn’t have mattered. What’s the point of having a gun to supposedly combat “tyranny” and “oppression” if you’re too afraid to fight back for fear of putting your family in danger? That’s why even the Germans that were against Hitler didn’t fight back or oppose him. People were TERRIFIED of the Nazi SS. You never knew who they were, where they were, and if they were listening. You never knew if the guy sitting behind you in the pub was actually a Nazi SS spy or if they were just around the corner listening in on your conversation. Fear kept people in line.
There were Germans who fought back, I can’t remember the exact number but there were several assassination attempts on Hitlers life by Germans throughout WWII. The point I was making was that everyone keeps saying “Hitler was against gun control cause lookie here he relaxed the laws.” but in reality he just made it easier for people who agreed with him and therefore were not a threat. And even still anyone outside the party could not privately own any “military style” weapon, and it was still a contortionists effort just to obtain a “hunting firearm.” My point is he was still very much in favor of gun control, and people who say otherwise apparently don’t understand what gun control is.
Wouldn’t have mattered if the jews, blacks, gypsies, gays, and Germans that didn’t agree with Hitler would have had access to guns or not. As I said before, people were scared to death of the Nazi SS and their spies. There was such a fear about them that a glorious uprising or revolt wouldn’t have been possible. Plus let’s be honest, NOBODY in their right mind is going to go up against a war machine and essentially march to their deaths hoping to go out in a blaze of glory. Nobody in their right mind is going to risk the safety of their loved ones and risk getting the SS’s attention. Fear can be a valuable tool and the Nazis used it perfectly. If the day came that we were invaded by a foreign country or (as so many gun enthusiasts fantasize about) we had a tyrannical government, odds are that you’re not going to immediately run out to get in on the fight with guns blazing. Fear will grip you and you’ll think twice about it. It’s just that it hasn’t happened (nor will it ever) that makes it very easy for most people to claim that they would join the perverbial fight in a heartbeat.
And as a gun owner myself, I know what gun control is and I am all for reasonable common sense gun control. Gun control generally refers to laws or policies that regulate the manufacture, sale, transfer, possession, modification, or use of firearms. They vary greatly around the world. It’s to try and keep guns from falling into the wrong hands. It doesn’t get any simpler than that. It’s not about oppression, tyranny, the second amendment, or disarming the people. Hitler simply exploited gun control and used it to his advantage. The guy was a genocidal sociopath but he was very smart and very charismatic.
